iStock/Getty Students aren’t waiting for their schools to introduce them to generative artificial intelligence, a new report finds. And their natural gravitation to the technology offers insight for the companies developing AI tools for the K-12 space.

Most teenagers — seven in 10 — say they’ve tried at least one type of AI tool, according to a survey-based report by Common Sense Media , an organization that advocates for child-friendly policies and laws regarding media. Yet a similar number say their school either doesn’t have any rules around generative AI, or they aren’t familiar with any such guidelines.

The report, which is based on a nationally representative survey in March and April of more than 1,000 parents and 1,000 teens between 13 and 18 years old, offers a look at where and how students have independently explored the emerging technology.

It also highlights the impact that conversations about AI between educators, students, and parents — or the lack thereof — can have on how the technology is considered and used.

The K-12 industry has been thrust into the center of national debates about how the emergency technology should or shouldn’t be used. Those discussions have been pushed along both by the potential for cheating on schoolwork and the opportunities for AI to improve learning practices . See Also
