(7News) TOPICS: Microsoft AI Viruses Pandemic Device Neural networks Premonition Disease WASHINGTON (7News) — Artificial intelligence is being used by Microsoft to detect diseases. Microsoft recently showed off its Premonition device to 7News’ Lindsey Mastis at the AI Expo in D.C.
Ethan Jackson, Senior Director at Microsoft, said it’s like a biological weather station using neural networks to identify different species. Neural networks are a type of AI designed similar to how the human brain works.
The device can look for viruses like COVID-19 before there’s a potential pandemic.

“Imagine that a robot can really be out there, understanding biology and climate-sensitive part of the world where diseases emerge, and there’s nobody there to see them,” Jackson said.
One example shows how the device identifies viruses being carried by a mosquito, like Zika or dengue fever.
