Collection 22 December 2023 Submission status Closed Submission deadline 22 December 2024 Cannabis sativa is a species of fast-growing non-woody plants, rich in metabolites like terpenes and cannabinoids, which has historically been farmed for multiple purposes, such as food, construction materials or natural fibres, making it an ideal source of sustainable produce. Cultivars with high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, on the other hand, have been extensively farmed for recreational purposes, due to this chemical´s psychotropic properties. Recent reports suggest that the cannabinoids from C. sativa can additionally have applications in the treatment of some cancers and neurological diseases, as well as pain management, although the extent of these benefits remains controversial and poorly studied. Research on the species still lags behind other crops, mostly due to governmental regulations that have imposed severe restrictions on growing the plants. These, however, are gradually being lifted in several countries, creating new opportunities to explore the potential of this versatile species.
