Colorado will begin accepting license applications on Dec. 31 as individual municipalities continue to create guidelines.

DENVER — Colorado is nearing the official launch of its psychedelic therapy program, allowing licensed therapists to treat individuals with psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms. This initiative, passed by voters two years ago, will not involve dispensaries. Instead, treatments will take place at specialized, licensed healing centers.

The state is putting the final touches on regulations governing the new program, including a comprehensive patient screening process. Following this, individuals will be matched with licensed therapists who design personalized treatment plans. The therapy will involve a three-to-five-hour session at one of the state’s licensed centers, where therapists will help administer psilocybin and provide support throughout the experience.

While state-level guidelines are being finalized, local municipalities, like Colorado Springs, are considering additional regulations . City council members there are reviewing an ordinance that could restrict healing centers to certain areas, potentially limiting their locations. A proposed rule would prohibit centers within 1,000 feet of schools or daycare centers, which could leave few viable locations in the city.

Eric Escudero said Denver’s Excise and Licensing Department is preparing to issue recommendations to the city council as soon as next week.

“Since this was passed at a statewide level by voters, cities cannot opt-out, but they can make decisions on what time can they operate and where can they operate, decisions like that,” he said. “Those are the type of things that cities like Denver are considering right now and we have to hurry up and make a decision because this is coming very soon at the beginning of the year.”

Mikki Vogt said she plans to apply for a license to operate in Littleton.

“The legalization of psychedelic therapy in Colorado is a game changer for therapists like myself who are constantly searching for more ways to help our clients heal from debilitating conditions like depression, anxiety, addiction and PTSD,” she said. The state plans to begin accepting applications for healing […]
