Juice cleanses have cycled in and out of popularity, with devoted fans claiming they aid digestion, “detox” the body, and promote weight loss. But not everyone is on board —many nutritionists warn against them, and now, new research suggests they might do more harm than good .

A small study published in Nutrients found that even a short juice cleanse can throw the gut microbiome off balance. Researchers noted that this could have a significant effect on digestion and even brain function. What Nutritionists Want You to Know About Juice Cleanses

Experts have weighed in on juice cleanses, and most agree —they’re not as healthy as they seem. Here’s what you need to know about how they affect the body and why many professionals strongly advise against them.

A small study involving 14 participants tested three different diets over three days: a juice-only diet, a diet combining juice and food, and a plant-based diet. To track changes, researchers collected stool, saliva, and inner-cheek samples before, after, and 14 days post-diet.

Their findings? Those who followed the juice-only diet had a surge in inflammatory bacteria , which researchers linked to high sugar intake and lack of fiber. The study also found increased levels of bacteria associated with gut permeability issues (meaning the gut lining becomes more porous), inflammation, and even cognitive decline. Turns out, drinking your fruits and veggies might not be as harmless as it seems!
