In the aftermath of 2019, healthcare operations and patient care have had to pivot from traditional practices in many ways. As one example, the Covid-19 pandemic not only drove major shifts in labor needs but also accelerated the adoption and utilization of AI technologies.

But when it comes to AI, without proper strategic planning and thoughtful systems integration, instead of increasing revenue and bridging these gaps, some hospitals could risk destabilizing an already fragile system.

With this concern in mind, I believe the characteristics of a smart hospital can help provide a guide for incorporating AI and other technological systems. What Is A Smart Hospital?

The evolution toward the smart hospital is underway—and I firmly believe it needs to be. A World Health Organization report indicated that by 2030 , we will need to "fill and sustain at least 10 million additional full-time jobs in health- and social-care sectors to address the needs of underserved populations."

Currently, over 50% of rural hospitals within the United States are operating in the red, grappling with rising operational costs, decreasing reimbursements and the ever-growing demand for patient services. A May 2024 report by Kaufman Hall signaled an alarming 5% decline in hospital outpatient revenue, reflecting the competitive challenges of providing outpatient care.

According to a consensus by hospital executives gathered at the 2024 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition, "a smart hospital leverages technology, digitization and data to deliver superior outcomes, enhanced patient and staff experiences and class-leading operational efficiency."The same source lists the eight characteristics of a smart hospital as being integrated, data-driven, innovative, connected, automated, experience-centric, virtualized and safe and secure.
