The director of H.O.O.V.E.S. estimates about 50% of female veterans the organization helps has some form of Military Sexual Trauma. More Videos

SWANTON, Ohio — Whether it’s war time trauma, or cases of sexual assault and intimate partner violence, female veterans are twice as likely as their male counterparts to develop post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs .

Often, that trauma is in the form of Military Sexual Trauma or MST, defined by the VA as "sexual assault or sexual harassment experienced during military service."

"I do think that we experience things more than our male counterparts, and we are also less likely to speak up,” said Tiffani Hollis , who was in the Army from 1992 to 2003.

Hollis is now the Director and Outreach and Impact Coordinator for H.O.O.V.ES, or Healing of our Veterans Equine Services, an organization that uses equestrian care to help veterans deal with trauma.

Hollis says the organization serves a number of women veterans in the community, many of whom have experienced MST in some form.

"I would say about 50% of the female veterans that come through may have some MST," said Hollis. "Mostly the majority of the veterans do suffer from PTSD though,” said Hollis.

And organizations like H.O.O.V.E.S. are stepping up to help veterans who need it.

"Our goal at H.O.O.V.E.S. is to help veterans transform their post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth, which benefits themselves, their tribe, which is their family, as well as the greater community. So I just encourage them. And if you’re still out there struggling, reach out for help,” said Hollis. If you’re a veteran experiencing MST in particular or PTSD in general click here for more information on H.O.O.V.E.S.You can also call the Women Veterans Call Center at 1-855-829-66-36 or 1-855 V-A-WOMEN.
