Benenden Health said it had noted a 75% rise in online searches for ‘natural ways to manage anxiety’ in the past three months and a 100% increase for ‘foods that make anxiety worse’ in the last year.
Llinos Connolly at Benenden Health said: "Nutrition can play a huge role in mental wellbeing, including anxiety. But just as there are some foods that worsen anxiety symptoms, there are plenty of tasty and nutritional meals that can help alleviate common symptoms too. The most effective way to reduce anxiety through your diet is by eating healthy, balanced meals.
“But when you are feeling anxious it’s common to feel nauseous which can put you off eating altogether. However, not eating enough calories a day, can actually worsen your anxiety symptoms as it makes your blood sugar levels dip.
“Additionally, there’s increasing evidence that ultra-processed foods, like cereals, processed meats and crisps, may contribute to symptoms of anxiety. So, avoiding these foods during anxious times could be beneficial. Eating easily digestible foods and staying well-hydrated can increase your mood-boosting serotonin levels, helping to relieve symptoms of anxiety.” Five foods to help with anxiety
Dark leafy greens
Incorporating dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and pak choi into your meals can help manage anxiety. They’re packed with brain-boosting vitamins such as magnesium that regulate serotonin and promote better sleep, a common issue for those struggling with anxiety.
Additionally, these greens are rich in vitamin B which can help to reduce stress levels. Try mixing spinach into your favourite curry or tossing pak choi into your stir fry for a delicious, anxiety-easing meal.
