Red meat (beef, pork, veal, and lamb) is a popular main course in Western dishes. Yet, consuming too much red meat has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.1 Processed red meat like hot dogs and cold cuts can increase your risk for heart disease and certain types of cancers.1 Still, when consumed in moderation, red meat is a good source of protein, vitamin B12, and iron.2

The red coloring on the meat comes from a protein that increases oxygen flow to your muscles through your red blood cells. This helps your muscles with post-workout recovery.
