However, key elements are still missing in the approach.

The current state of AI is transactional, utilitarian and prompt/response-based—very different from relationships between humans and, therefore, lacking in the ability to provide the value we seek in a relationship. To create long-term, meaningful relationships between AI and humans, we need to create a framework that will enable it.

As the cofounder and CEO of a company that has developed an AI companion for older adults, I do not believe that innovators should try to replace human relationships with AIs. Yet, in some cases, where modern society fails to provide the type of relationships and social interactions that we need to thrive, technology can help fill in the gaps. We can use AI to help foster deeper relationships between people and help amplify the person living with the AI.

To do this, we need to understand how human relationships are formed and create AI that does just that adequately and consistently over time. Here are some of the factors that companies working in this space should consider.
