Your gut health may influence what happens in your body and brain. Increased toxins and waste in your gut may be connected to ADHD, but changing your diet may help.
Though attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition, it may be much more closely related to your gut than you think. The connection between ADHD and your gut
In a small 2023 study , researchers analyzed the association between gut health and ADHD . They specifically looked at fungi in fecal samples from 35 children with ADHD and 35 children without the condition.
These fungi comprise your mycobiome (“myco-” meaning fungus, and “biome” meaning group of life).
From the analysis of stool samples, researchers found that, compared with the 35 participants in the control group, the 35 participants with ADHD showed differences in particular fungi housed in their guts: higher amounts of Ascomycota
higher amounts of Candida (Candida albicans in particular)
lower amounts of Basidiomycota
Why is this important? This was one of the first studies using this technique to look at the mycobiome of people with ADHD. »LEARN MORE: Study links fungi in your microbiome to ADHD What does this mean for me if I have ADHD?
In another part of the study, researchers performed test-tube experiments with Candida albicans. They found that it increased the permeability of the participants’ gut lining. Your gut lining keeps toxins and waste products out of your gut and nutrients in it.A more permeable gut may lead to more inflammation throughout your body — even in your brain — because these toxins and wastes may more easily enter it.While the exact causes of ADHD are unknown (and it likely has multiple causes), inflammation may be one contributor . How you can balance your gut with ADHD It’s possible to rebalance your gut. It’s recommended to change your diet by including more whole foods and reducing or eliminating ultra-processed foods before reaching for supplements. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate supplements. Speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian before you try supplements for ADHD. Only buy supplements from trusted sources.
