When it comes to suicide prevention, drugs are hardly invented. However, in recent years doctors have discovered convincing evidence that small doses of ketamine – a drug used by doctors and veterinarians for its anesthetic properties – may be ideal for treating depression.
The new study published in ‘ American Journal of Psychiatry’ suggests that ketamine can also be used as a quick treatment for suicide prevention, Telegrafi reports.
In this study, depressed patients who received an infusion of ketamine reported rapid resolution of suicidal thoughts—most of which reported within hours of receiving the infusion.
The author of this study, Michael Grunebaum, considering the experiments he conducted with his team, says that treating suicidal thoughts with ketamine can really help someone who is in a serious condition.
The effectiveness of ketamine can also be demonstrated by many small studies that have been conducted over the years, where 50 or 60 percent of people have responded well to this treatment.
But ketamine is not a magic drug, because its effects are believed to last only a week, while frequent use of ketamine causes memory problems, and heavy use can cause coma and death! /Telegraph/
