Las Vegas has deployed a new private 5G network that incorporates an artificial intelligence (AI) radio access network (RAN) that optimises wireless networks and provides the potential for new revenue opportunities.
Powered by Vapor IO and NVIDIA’s AI Aerial platform, the collaboration unlocks the world’s first private 5G AI-RAN solution for cities.
The deployment confirms Las Vegas’ commitment to lead on private 5G and AI. The technology provides the automated infrastructure necessary to implement low-latency services, enabling voice, video, data and AI applications on a common platform and employs the principles of shared infrastructure.
Michael Sherwood (pictured), Chief Information and Technology Officer (CITO) for the City of Las Vegas , told Cities Today that initial efforts will focus on testing the network’s potential for workforce development and educational initiatives, with the goal of enhancing community well-being.
“We will also expand our testing to include the deployment of IoT sensors and cameras enhancing public safety,” he said. “Wireless technology offers vast opportunities, and its flexibility and deployment agility are essential to our success.”
The deployment of several thousand cameras across the city in 2025 will allow Las Vegas to shift workloads between edge data centres and optimise performance in real time. This includes enabling application experiences, such as powering autonomous drones or supporting smart infrastructure.
Sherwood said the new network will not only be an advantage for residents but also for him as CITO.
“Particularly in terms of control, security, and performance optimisation,” he said. “Speed and flexibility are certainly key advantages, and having the right foundation really helps deliver the solutions our customers and community need.”He said that with Las Vegas being a global hub for entertainment, sports, and technology, the city is perfectly positioned to explore new technologies that not only strengthen community connections but also create new economic opportunities.“Utilising 5G and AI will certainly help propel Las Vegas to new heights leading to exciting opportunities,” he added. “By harnessing vast amounts of data from industries like entertainment, tourism, technology, and education, AI can transform this information into actionable insights that improve public services, optimise transportation, boost local businesses, and enhance educational experiences.” […]
