Aug. 6 marked the first day that nonmedical cardholders could legally buy marijuana in Ohio , and it’s a safe bet that sales of Taco Bell, greasy fries and pizza bagels spiked shortly thereafter.

Even those who don’t indulge in "the devil’s lettuce" know that marijuana and the munchies go together like Cheech and Chong. Unfortunately for regular users, the bottomless pit of hunger that sets in after a few tokes can lead to an expensive snack habit.

In the spirit of thriftiness, why not make your own mind-mellowing goodies? There are myriad mind-mellowing munchables that you can bake to get baked.

Cannabutter is the starting point for most homemade pot edibles , especially baked goods, since it can be subbed in any recipe calling for regular butter.

While cannabutter takes time to make, it’s easy to use once it’s done. Business Insider offered this recipe, along with several tips.

What you’ll need: 1 quarter-ounce (7 grams) whole cannabis flower, broken into nuggets

8 ounces (1 cup) butter 8 ounces (1 cup) water Cannabis grinder Nonstick baking sheet Stovetop pot Cheesecloth Airtight glass jar Thermometer (optional) Weed 101: Ohio recreational marijuana for beginners: Navigating THC, pre-rolls, edibles and terpenes Step 1: Decarbing the cannabis To activate the cannabinoids inside the flower, you must decarboxylate ("decarb") it first: Grind the cannabis flower. Heat oven to 230-245 degrees Fahrenheit Spread cannabis on nonstick baking sheet (parchment paper can be used to further help prevent sticking). Bake for 30 minutes, stirring every five minutes to make sure it’s evenly decarbed. Do not overbake. Step 2: Steeping on the stovetop Melt 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of water together. Set burner to lowest heat (150-200 degrees Fahrenheit). Add decarbed cannabis and mix. Cover pot with lid. Simmer at 150 degrees Fahrenheit for at least three hours, stirring occasionally.
