They named this system DEMENTIA. Their work was recently published in the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics .

Alzheimer’s disease is becoming more common as people live longer. This condition causes memory loss, confusion, and other problems that worsen over time. Catching the disease early is important because it gives patients a better chance to manage their symptoms and plan for the future.

One of the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s is changes in how a person speaks, such as forgetting words or having trouble forming sentences.

In recent years, scientists have started using computers to analyze speech for signs of Alzheimer’s. This method is cheaper and less invasive than medical scans or tests, but it has its challenges.

Many existing tools are complicated to use, don’t work well with different types of data, or produce results that are hard for doctors to understand. These issues make it difficult to use speech analysis widely in real-life medical care.

To address these problems, Professor Li Hai and his team created the DEMENTIA system. This system is special because it combines different types of information—speech recordings, written text, and expert knowledge about Alzheimer’s.

Using advanced computer technologies, it analyzes how different pieces of information are connected and improves how well the system can detect the disease.

The DEMENTIA system uses something called a hybrid attention mechanism, which helps it focus on the most important parts of the speech and text data it analyzes. It can also predict how much a person’s cognitive abilities, like memory and problem-solving, have declined. This feature makes it easier for doctors to track how a patient’s condition is changing over time.

One of the most important features of the DEMENTIA system is its ability to explain its results. For example, it can show why it thinks someone may have Alzheimer’s by highlighting specific patterns in their speech. This makes the system’s findings more reliable and easier for […]
