AI has significant potential in the realm of hyper-personalized healthcare. Open AI and Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global entered a landmark partnership earlier this month, announcing the creation of a new venture: Thrive AI Health. Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI, and Huffington, Founder of Thrive Global, co-wrote a piece in Time announcing the launch, explaining that using AI to harness the power of hyper-personalization can truly make a difference in improving daily behaviors and ultimately, improve health outcomes: “These are the ideas behind Thrive AI Health, the company the OpenAI Startup Fund and Thrive Global are jointly funding to build a customized, hyper-personalized AI health coach.”

Although digital health coaches are becoming more popular, this new venture aims to enable a hyper-personalized approach by learning daily routines to better accommodate healthy lifestyle changes. For example, the authors explain that perhaps the AI coach may recommend healthy changes that are congruent to a user’s existing tasks for the day: “go on a 10-minute walk with your child after you pick them up from school at 3:15 p.m.” or “start your wind-down routine at 10 p.m. since you have to get up at 6 a.m. the next morning to make your flight.”

This hyper-personalization is what will ultimately retain users and actually provide impact. While most AI driven coaches can harness health data to provide generic recommendations, few actually seamlessly embed themselves into the daily schedules of users, which makes it challenging to actually complete the daily health tasks. As the ecosystem of AI driven tools and digital health platforms grows, users are finding the variety of services increasingly siloed from one another; that is, while there is significant growth in the numerous services and platforms that can truly improve health outcomes, they often do not connect with each other, forcing users to approach their health in a disjointed manner.
