OpenAI , once the undisputed titan of artificial intelligence, is seemingly crumbling right before our eyes.

In a stunning turn of events that has left the tech world reeling, three top executives have abandoned ship this week, leaving the company adrift in increasingly turbulent waters. I shared the following note with my OpenAI colleagues today:

I’ve made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI. This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment, and to start a new chapter of my career where I can return to hands-on technical work. Greg Brockman , another co-founder and the company’s president, is embarking on an “extended sabbatical” — corporate speak for “one foot out the door.” I’m taking a sabbatical through end of year. First time to relax since co-founding OpenAI 9 years ago. The mission is far from complete; we still have a safe AGI to build. Peter Deng, a product virtuoso poached from Meta just last year, is also bidding adieu according to The Information , with his brief tenure being a testament to the company’s rapidly shifting fortunes.

This mass exodus of talent threatens to transform OpenAI from an industry leader into a cautionary tale.
