Prioritizing mental health is more important than ever

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Prioritizing mental health is more important than ever. Dr. Jonathan Leake, co-owner of Derive Health, joined us today, to discuss mental health hygiene. The rates of young people in Mecklenburg going to emergency rooms due to suicidal thoughts or a suicide attempt and of adults going to emergency rooms due to depression are getting worse, according to the presentation. The rate of adults reporting eight or more days per month of “not good” mental health also increased to 20.1% of residents from about 15% in 2018. We often hear about physical hygiene, but what about mental health hygiene? “Just as we take steps to keep our bodies healthy and clean, mental health hygiene involves daily habits and practices to nurture and protect our mental well-being” says Dr. Leake. He adds ”we grow up learning to brush our teeth and shower to care for our physical bodies and we should apply the same attention to our Mental Health.” “We must normalize mental health hygiene.” Mental health hygiene practices can include: Mindfulness & meditation: These reduce stress and enhance emotional regulation.

Regular physical activity: Exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce anxiety.

Journaling: Writing in a journal can improve mental health by providing a space to process emotions, reduce stress, and increase self-awareness.

Quality sleep: A consistent sleep schedule boosts cognitive function and emotional resilience.

Connection with others: Social interactions foster a sense of belonging and reduce loneliness.

Limiting screen time: Reducing exposure to social media can alleviate stress and improve focus. This goes hand in hand with connecting with others.

Alternative therapies, such as ketamine therapy or NAD+ therapy , are powerful options known for boosting brain function, energy levels, and mental clarity—essential components of a solid mental health routine. Our brains are powerful tools that deserve to be kept clean and fit. Adopting these practices will go a long way in improving your mental health. For more information visit https://derivehealth.com/
