WASHINGTON D.C.: Research reveals that some 40 percent of marijuana users now smoke it daily, surpassing the daily drinking of alcohol.

While alcohol remains more widely used in the United States, 2022 saw the first time time daily marijuana use overtook high-frequency drinking, as reported by Jonathan Caulkins, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University.

"A good 40% of current cannabis users are using it daily or near daily, a pattern that is more associated with tobacco use than typical alcohol use," Caulkins said, as quoted by the Associated Press.

The findings on recent marijuana research were published this week in the journal Addiction.

In stark numbers, some 17.7 million people used marijuana daily or almost daily in 2022, compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily drinkers, according to the study.

Since 1992, the number of people using marijuana has surged by 15 times, said the report.Researchers believe the increasing popularity of marijuana is linked to changes in laws which have made it easily available to the public.Other research indicates that high-frequency users often become addicted to marijuana, according to Dr. David A. Gorelick, a psychiatry professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.Gorelick added that the large number of frequent marijuana users in the United States means more people are at risk for becoming addicted."High frequency use also increases the risk of developing cannabis-associated psychosis," in which an addicted person loses touch with reality, he said, as quoted by the Associated Press.
