AI Main Image The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its integration into our daily lives is impossible to ignore. From Chat GPT to Google Gemini, this technology is touted as time-saving and beneficial for adults at home and in the workplace.
But what role does AI play at school and in the lives of young students? The time-saving aspect might be appealing to a middle schooler trying to finish their homework quickly. A busy high school student might see the benefit in having Chat GPT write an essay that’s due the next day.
With a shift toward online instruction and personal devices, schools — and especially teachers — face challenges making sure students use this new technology appropriately.
For an in-depth look at the issue of AI in schools, we caught up with David Harris, Assistant Vice President for Instruction at Trident Technical College , and W. Ian O’Bryne, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the Department of Teacher Education at the College of Charleston .
These college educators provided insight into how it needs to be monitored, how much is unknown, and how AI programs can enhance learning and innovation.
Q: With Chat GPT on the rise and the growing prevalence of AI assistance and tools, how are teachers and schools (especially middle and high schools) making sure students are doing their own work and not cheating?
Harris: “We can’t speak for K-12, but in higher ed we rely on the expertise of the instructors and some tech tools such as Turnitin [ plagiarism detection software ] to help spot potential issues. It’s important to note that when an instructor suspects a student of using AI to cheat on assignments, they have discussions with the student to find out what really happened and don’t rely 100% on the technology to make the determination for the instructor.”
Dr. O’Byrne: “While there are concerns about students seeking shortcuts and compromising their learning integrity, it’s essential not to preemptively assume widespread cheating across all students.
