One trend that has gained recent popularity is microdosing with psychedelics.

Microdosing involves ingesting small dosages of psychedelic substances. That can range anywhere from 5% to 20% of regular recreational use.

One of the substances consumed is lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD. Since LSD is illegal and not regulated, knowing the exact dosage you are consuming can be unknown.

Another psychedelic substance used for microdosing is psilocybin. Both it and LSD can lead to a tolerance build-up.

That increased tolerance can lead to limited future results if a person uses the same amount of dosage. KOAT and University of New Mexico health expert Dr. Abinash Achrekar explains why people use psychedelics this way.

"People often microdose psychedelics to try to treat mental health conditions such as treatment-resistant depression or to enhance creativity, concentration, and empathy," Achrekar said.

He also said early findings suggest it may improve one’s mood, focus and creativity. However, the reporting is still early and scientific evidence on the topic is still limited.Study results are mixed, with some showing possible benefits and others finding no significant effects. For safety, Achrekar said these illegal substances can have unknown effects for some users."The small doses used in microdosing are generally considered to be low-risk compared to recreational doses," Achrekar said. "However, psychedelics can still have unpredictable effects, especially in people with a history of mental health issues. There are also legal risks, as these substances are illegal in many places."
