Veteran finds hope through equine therapy after military trauma. (WRGB) TOPICS: Veteran Equine therapy Military trauma Suicide prevention PTSD Healing Support Community SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (WRGB) — Suicide is a national public health issue that affects all Americans, including veterans .

The good news, national data shows rates have dropped.

The month of September marks National Suicide Prevention Month and CBS6 is highlighting the work our local community is doing to support those who may be struggling.

Heidi Jennings enlisted in the military back in the 90’s excited to leave behind a small town for a new life.

“I decided to go into the military because I wanted to see bigger things and Schuylerville is pretty small,” said Jennings.

Her new life in the U.S. Navy quickly took a dark turn. "I was abducted off of an elevator while I was doing my laundry in the barracks by a barracks petty officer; someone in charge of the barracks. He took me and kidnapped me for eight days without my command knowing, without anybody knowing,” She continued. "He locked me in a supply closet, brutalized me, I’ll put it that way; let his friends brutalize me”. Assaulted, trips to the hospital, surgeries, and a court case that left her feeling empty, Heidi left the military in 2000; returning to civilian life, a challenge in itself.

Emma Quinn: “Coming home, readjusting to civilian life and not having that routine; but then on top of it you have this enormous trauma you’re trying to work through. How do you cope, how do you get up each morning?”

Heidi Jennings: "I have my kids, that’s my biggest factor, I have to do it for them. I have an amazing supportive person in my life who has shown me I can start trusting others.
