(WJAR) — MDMA is considered a schedule one controlled substance, which means it has a high potential for abuse.

Many know it by its street names: molly and ecstasy.

But, very recently, MDMA-assisted therapy has shown promise in treating those with chronic PTSD. And it’s actually being considered for approval by the FDA, along with psychotherapy.

Building on that, two researchers from Brown University are now embarking on a first-of-its kind study , enrolling veterans with PTSD and alcohol use disorder. Doctors Erica Eaton and Christy Capone are leading this new unique study out the Health Behavior Research Lab at Brown University School of Public health. It builds on what they do at the Providence VA.

"My role at the VA is I work specifically with veterans that have PTSD and substance use disorders," said Capone, a licensed clinical psychologist.

"And so this all came about and fueled part of our clinical work seeing veterans with PTSD and substance use and just essentially that we weren’t equipped with the treatments needed to reach this complex population." added Eaton, also a licensed clinical psychologist.12 veterans with a dual diagnosis of PTSD and alcohol-use disorder will be recruited for this pilot study."We meet with them, both therapists, for three sessions prior to even having the MDMA dosing session so they’ll come in, we get to know the, we establish trust," said Eaton.Throughout the duration, there will be two eight hour dosing sessions in a specially designed room.0 seconds of 0 secondsVolume 90%Two researchers from Brown University are now embarking on a first of its kind study, enrolling veterans with PTSD and alcohol use disorder.
