The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a health alert following multiple reports of severe illness linked to the consumption of Diamond Shruumz-brand microdosing chocolate bars. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix , eight individuals across Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, and Pennsylvania have been affected, with six of those cases resulting in hospitalization. The symptoms reported include seizures, confusion, sleepiness, agitation, abnormal heart rates, and fluctuations in blood pressure, alongside nausea and vomiting.
The FDA has not yet identified the specific ingredient responsible for the incidents. Meanwhile, the agency urges consumers to steer clear from these chocolate bars, which can be bought online or in person at outlets that sell hemp-derived products. According to FOX 10 Phoenix , the authorities have not been able to compile a comprehensive list of retailers carrying the product yet, however, they recommend that "people do not purchase or consume any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand Microdosing Chocolate Bars from any retail or online locations at this time."
While microdosing is popular among certain circles for its alleged benefits to creativity and mental health, the trend has moved far beyond Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and into mainstream wellness. Business Insider recalls that the industry saw a significant influx of investment in recent years, amassing $163.6 million during the first nine months of 2020 alone. Despite this boom, the events surrounding Diamond Shruumz demonstrate potential hazards when such trends are not closely regulated.
Diamond Shruumz’s website states that their microdosing chocolate bars are made with a "proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms" and are absent of actual psychedelic substances like psilocybin or amanita. The products are meant to provide an "enjoyable experience" without the effects of scheduled drugs. Nevertheless, the severe reactions reported have prompted the FDA to look into the cause of these illnesses, and consider appropriate next steps. "FDA is working to determine the cause of these illnesses and is considering the appropriate next steps. More information will be provided as it becomes available," says the news release obtained by Business Insider . Representatives for Diamond Shruumz did not respond to Business a request for comment.
