DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The Fourth of July is Thursday and a big part of the celebration is practicing fireworks safety and being mindful of those around you, especially veterans.
Fireworks can be an awkward reminder for those who served in combat or went through a fire, explosion or even gun violence.
Whether expected or unexpected, fireworks can cause distress.
About seven percent of Americans experience PTSD in their lifetime, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
If you or someone you know has PTSD, there are ways to reduce symptoms during fireworks.
Remind yourself that you are not in danger, PTSD can trick your brain into thinking things are not what they seem, fireworks can resemble the explosions some military personnel and veterans experienced while deployed.
If you start feeling anxious, breathe deeply and slowly, breathing exercises are another critical coping strategy for managing PTSD.
Prioritize your mental health, taking care of your mental health and developing healthy coping actions like, talking to a therapist or a related mental health professional for emotional support during fireworks season.
Experts say it may feel more comfortable for veterans to completely avoid events like the Fourth of July but that is a short-term fix that may worsen the problem over time. Copyright 2024 KWQC. All rights reserved.
